Meta, Microsoft, X are teaming up to fight Apple’s plan to open up App Store to other external payment options

Image
Meta Platforms Inc, Microsoft Corp, X Corp, and Match Group Inc have jointly urged a federal judge to dismiss Apple's proposed plan to open its App Store to external payment options. In an unusual collective filing, the companies argued that Apple's proposal fails to align with the 2021 ruling, which found the iPhone manufacturer in violation of California unfair competition laws. The ruling mandated Apple to permit app developers to direct users to their own payment systems. Citing similarities with arguments put forth by Epic Games Inc in its ongoing antitrust battle against Apple, the companies asserted that Apple's plan imposes new constraints on app developers, hindering the competition that the injunction aimed to foster. The joint filing represents the latest development in the ongoing dispute over Apple's stringent control of its app marketplace, which stands as one of the world's predominant platforms alongside Alphabet Inc.'s Google Play. Last year, ...

App cache on Android: When should you clear it and how to do so

Image
Clearing the cache can be beneficial in some cases. If your Android phone has started feeling a bit sluggish lately, there's a quick fix you can try before resorting to more drastic measures like factory resets. We're talking about clearing the cached data that builds up from your apps over time. It's an easy process that can breathe new life into a lagging device. What is cached storage? Cached data, or cache files, are like little notes your apps jot down temporarily to quickly retrieve stuff you use often. For example, Twitter/X might cache a few posts so that it doesn’t launch into an empty feed when the network is flaky. Or Netflix can cache movie posters so that it doesn’t have to load them again the next time you re-launch the app. The idea is, instead of starting from scratch every single time, apps store commonly accessed pieces locally as cache files. Without cached data, your apps would be rebuilding stuff from the ground up constantly. A little local storage s...

How To Factory Reset And Start Using Your iPhone From Scratch

Image
Afactory reset, also referred to as a hard reset or master reset, is a procedure that erases all data and settings from your iPhone, restoring it to its original, factory-default state. This can be beneficial if your iPhone is experiencing persistent issues, if you wish to start anew, or if you plan to sell or give away the device. It's important to note that a factory reset permanently deletes all data and cannot be undone, so it's essential to create a backup of your important data before proceeding with the reset. Back up your data before proceeding with the factory reset. This can be done through iCloud or iTunes (on a computer). After the reset, you can use this backup to restore your data and settings. To back up using iCloud, go to “Settings” > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then press “Back Up Now.” To back up your iPhone using iTunes, connect it to your computer, select iTunes, pick your device and then click “Back Up Now.” Sign out from iCloud and iT...

Google I/O 2024 is less than a month away, here is what you can expect from the event

Image
The Google I/O is less than a month away and with the event date approaching, speculations around what we might get to see from the tech giant are surfacing. Last year, the Google I/O event was dominated by AI, with new Bing search as well as Gemini being introduced to the world. This year too, AI is expected to take the centerstage at the event but that is not all. There is also speculation that we might get a peak at the Google Pixel 8a. Now, the Google I/O isn't the sort of event that focuses much on hardware products, which is why, apart from the Google Pixel 8a, not much is expected to be unveiled in terms of gadgets.Ƃ The date for the event was unveiled a couple of days back. This year, the Google I/O isƂ happening on May 14. Google announced the event date in a fun way, inviting users to solve a series of puzzles to unveil it. New Truecaller feature uses AI to detect and block spam calls: Here’s how to enable it

Image
Truecaller is getting a new AI-powered tool that helps detect and block more spam. Called 'Max', the feature is currently available on the Android version of the app and works by blocking calls that are not from your list of approved contacts. According to TechCrunch, if a number is not in Truecaller's database, it will use AI to determine if the call is spam or not. Until now, the app used its database, which contains millions of phone numbers to match and detect if a call was spam. However, it also has the potential to block calls from unknown numbers and non-spammers. The new AI-powered tool is currently limited to Truecaller Premium subscribers who use an Android device. This is because, unlike Google, Apple does not allow caller ID services like Truecaller to check and block a spam call. It looks like the company is trying ways to increase spam call protection without the user having to fiddle with the in-app settings. To enable the new feature and protect yourself a...

YouTube no longer shows video recommendations when logged out.

Image
YouTube now requires users to watch videos to get recommendations.  YouTube, the video-sharing platform used by billions worldwide every day, is showing a blank page for users who haven't logged in to their Google accounts. Until now, the YouTube home page was often filled with video recommendations based on the user's local history. If you log out from your main browser, use a browser where you haven't logged in to YouTube or use Incognito mode, the website will show a message saying "Try searching to get started. Start watching videos to help us build a feed of videos you'll love" as can be seen in the image below. First spotted by Bleeping Computer, it is still unclear if and when YouTube made the change. The report also claims that YouTube did not show any recommendations on different computers and some users who were logged in and cleared their search and watch history were also getting the same message. YouTube no longer shows video recommendations whe...

Image
Apple's 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference is just months away, typically kicking off in early June with a keynote. While it is primarily a developer-focused conference, WWDC usually centers around iOS updates rather than new hardware. This time around, iOS 18 is expected to be the most significant software update for the iPhone that Apple has shipped in years. Apple CEO Tim Cook himself recently hinted at major announcements related to Generation AI coming later this year. Going by his words, it's safe to say that WWDC is the event where all the action might unfold. iOS 18 is said to be a major overhaul Apple's iOS 16 and iOS 17 were modest updates, with very minimal visual changes. these two iterations of iPhone software mostly focused on stabilising the OS by optimising the already existing core functionalities.
