YouTube no longer shows video recommendations when logged out.

YouTube now requires users to watch videos to get recommendations.

YouTube, the video-sharing platform used by billions worldwide every day, is showing a blank page for users who haven't logged in to their Google accounts. Until now, the YouTube home page was often filled with video recommendations based on the user's local history.

If you log out from your main browser, use a browser where you haven't logged in to YouTube or use Incognito mode, the website will show a message saying "Try searching to get started. Start watching videos to help us build a feed of videos you'll love" as can be seen in the image below.

First spotted by Bleeping Computer, it is still unclear if and when YouTube made the change. The report also claims that YouTube did not show any recommendations on different computers and some users who were logged in and cleared their search and watch history were also getting the same message.

YouTube no longer shows video recommendations when logged out or using Incognito.
We also tested if YouTube has stopped showing video recommendations in Incognito mode or when logged out and can confirm that the home page is now blank and only shows the aforementioned message. However, this is not the first time YouTube has stopped showing recommendations to users who haven't signed in or have turned off their watch history. In August last year, the company rolled out the change to some but quickly reverted its decision after user backlash.

While the change may not be welcomed by YouTube users who don't want Google to see what they are watching, it may be a blessing in disguise for those who did not find the random recommendations useful. Moreover, this may allow users to build their video recommendations locally from scratch.
