YouTube Premium subscribers get a sleep timer

Image
Ever find yourself falling asleep to a YouTube video only to wake up hours later with your history filled with auto-playing next video after auto-playing next video? Well, in that case you probably need a sleep timer, and luckily YouTube is now offering just after that, well, a set period of time. It’s not an earth-shattering feature, but it’s still bound to be handy for people who like to go to sleep with long podcasts or white noise playing in the background. But it's limited to YouTube Premium subscribers. And it's an experimental test feature. And, perhaps most annoyingly, the test is only running until September 2. After that, the feature might make it into YouTube per se, shedding its experimental training wheels, or it could disappear forever, there's absolutely no telling at this point. If you subscribe to Premium and want to test the sleep timer out, head on over to this page and enable it. Once you do that, when you open YouTube on your phone or desktop you can n...

EXCITING FEATURES COMING TO ANDROID 15

Image
Every year, we excitedly anticipate the release of fresh editions for our beloved operating system . The deployment of Android 14 has been underway for six months, reaching a diverse array of devices. Now, our attention turns to the forthcoming Android 15, of which certain features are already known. Although we have nearly six months to go before witnessing the next version, the anticipated launch is expected to coincide with the debut of the Pixel 9 in the fall. Nevertheless, snippets of information from beta versions and rumors have been gradually trickling in, building anticipation that I can hardly contain. WIDGETS ON THE LOCK SCREEN Lock screen widgets have become an integral feature of Android 14, having undergone a refresh a couple of years ago coinciding with the introduction of Material You. However, the competition has scored a notable win by extending these widgets to the lock screen. A functionality that our favored operating system attempted previously, albeit witho...

App cache on Android: When should you clear it and how to do so

Image
Clearing the cache can be beneficial in some cases. If your Android phone has started feeling a bit sluggish lately, there's a quick fix you can try before resorting to more drastic measures like factory resets. We're talking about clearing the cached data that builds up from your apps over time. It's an easy process that can breathe new life into a lagging device. What is cached storage? Cached data, or cache files, are like little notes your apps jot down temporarily to quickly retrieve stuff you use often. For example, Twitter/X might cache a few posts so that it doesn’t launch into an empty feed when the network is flaky. Or Netflix can cache movie posters so that it doesn’t have to load them again the next time you re-launch the app. The idea is, instead of starting from scratch every single time, apps store commonly accessed pieces locally as cache files. Without cached data, your apps would be rebuilding stuff from the ground up constantly. A little local storage s...

New Truecaller feature uses AI to detect and block spam calls: Here’s how to enable it

Image
Truecaller is getting a new AI-powered tool that helps detect and block more spam. Called 'Max', the feature is currently available on the Android version of the app and works by blocking calls that are not from your list of approved contacts. According to TechCrunch, if a number is not in Truecaller's database, it will use AI to determine if the call is spam or not. Until now, the app used its database, which contains millions of phone numbers to match and detect if a call was spam. However, it also has the potential to block calls from unknown numbers and non-spammers. The new AI-powered tool is currently limited to Truecaller Premium subscribers who use an Android device. This is because, unlike Google, Apple does not allow caller ID services like Truecaller to check and block a spam call. It looks like the company is trying ways to increase spam call protection without the user having to fiddle with the in-app settings. To enable the new feature and protect yourself a...

YouTube no longer shows video recommendations when logged out.

Image
YouTube now requires users to watch videos to get recommendations.  YouTube, the video-sharing platform used by billions worldwide every day, is showing a blank page for users who haven't logged in to their Google accounts. Until now, the YouTube home page was often filled with video recommendations based on the user's local history. If you log out from your main browser, use a browser where you haven't logged in to YouTube or use Incognito mode, the website will show a message saying "Try searching to get started. Start watching videos to help us build a feed of videos you'll love" as can be seen in the image below. First spotted by Bleeping Computer, it is still unclear if and when YouTube made the change. The report also claims that YouTube did not show any recommendations on different computers and some users who were logged in and cleared their search and watch history were also getting the same message. YouTube no longer shows video recommendations whe...

YouTube begins testing an enhanced '1080p Premium' option for subscribers on mobile

Image
What more could change and move behind a paywall? YouTube appears to be starting its experimental kitchen once again with a new video option appearing for some. A new option appearing for some users of the video streaming service has been spotted by a user on Reddit (via This is Tech Today). YouTube seems to be testing a new video quality option labeled as "1080p Premium." However, with this test, YouTube has added a tagline that reads "Enhanced Bitrate" beneath the new option currently in testing for mobile watchers. A higher bitrate option would enhance a video overall affecting its overall image quality considering the video experiences less compression. Users on Reddit have chimed in about their most recent experience with YouTube's 1080p option. Many have noticed how its quality, while being the highest option a non-subscriber can muster, still doesn't look up to code. At the moment, the current version of the 1080p video option is a more compressed for...

Mozilla's Firefox Android extensions bring a more comfortable and safe mobile browsing experience

Image
Mozilla is introducing three new Firefox Android extensions to enhance the mobile browsing experience.  While the browsing experience on mobile is pretty good, it still doesn't really match what you'd find on a desktop or laptop. But over time, things have slowly gotten better, and Mozilla's latest extensions aim to provide users new tools in order to further enhance the mobile browsing experience. Firefox Relay Most of us have probably been in a position where we've needed to give out our email address but really didn't want to. Now, this could have been for some kind of sale promotion, dinner reservation or maybe something as simple as just trying to use an app. While sharing an email isn't typically a bad thing, there are sometimes drawbacks, like having that email address getting spammed or shared in a matter that you didn't directly authorize. It's hard to prevent this kind of stuff from happening, so Mozilla is now introducing Firefox Relay, an ext...

Android 14 'Upside Down Cake': Everything you need to know about Google's big update for Google Pixel smartphone near you in early 2023

Image
The most exciting thing about a big Android update is being able to follow a pattern to get a taste of all the new features. Google's Android 12 update marked the biggest visual redesign of the operating system since Android 5 Lollipop thanks to Material You. The new design philosophy, along with an exhaustive list of new features, made Android 12 look and feel radically different from previous iterations. Android 13 then came along and doubled down on many of the same aesthetic choices. Now we're moving on to Android 14, and there will likely be even more under-the-hood changes. Android 14's first beta hasn't arrived yet, but we already have some hints about what to expect in the future. Each new release will add new features and smaller improvements to different elements of the Android system. In the coming months, the first developer previews are expected to arrive for all the supported Pixel devices and some other non-Pixel phones. If you want all there is to know a...
